The EFL project is taking part in the Fête de la Science, hosted by Université Paris Cité at the Village des Sciences, Cour des Grands Moulins (entrance via esplanade Pierre Vidal-Naquet).
Friday, October 2, 9am–5pm, is reserved for school groups. Saturday, October 3, 2pm–6pm, is open to everyone.
This year’s theme, “Saveurs savantes” (“Scholarly Flavors”), celebrates cooking, taste and food through a scientific lens. EFL’s program sits right at the intersection of language and flavor.
Program:
- The Linguistic Picnic — a game exploring the secrets of sounds, words and expressions, and the diversity of the world’s languages.
- LinguaMap — food and language make a natural pair: listen to recipes from around the world and test your linguistic ear in the Grand Quiz.

- Language(s) and Bilingual Speakers Quiz — an audio game to guess the language, alongside a broader look at linguistic diversity worldwide. (Ranka Bijeljac-Babic and Arnaud Meyer, Association Bilingues et +)
- Persuasion Between the Lines — pragmatics, meaning and hidden messages in food advertising. (Barbara Hemforth and Flora Presslich)
- Languages of the World – Visions and Perspectives — a square world map showing country names in their original alphabets and phonetics; learn to say hello in 150 languages. (Marc Allassonnière-Tang, with the Nuées association)
- Language in Action! — how ultrasound, a common medical tool, can also help us understand the pronunciation of languages, including foreign ones. Take home an ultrasound image of your own tongue. (Anne Guyot Talbot)
